Further Information about Fortekor Tablets
Fortekor is a medication used in the treatment of congestive heart failure in dogs and renal failure in cats. Fortekor contains the active ingredient benazepril.  Fortekor is available in 2.5mg, 5mg and 20mg tablets sizes. The dosage will be dependant on the bodyweight of your dog or cat. The 5mg and 20mg tablet sizes come as flavour tablets that are more palatable (tastier) and therefore easier to administer though they are only licensed for dogs. Fortekor is a prescription only medication (POM-V) drug which means it is only available on prescription from your veterinary surgeon.

The active ingredient of fortekor is an Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitor (ACEI) called Benazepril. Benazepril is metabolised by the liver to the active metabolite benazeprilat. This will reduce the conversion of Angiotensin I to Angiotensin II. Angiotensin II causes constriction of blood vessels therefore increasing blood pressure and causing resistance to the heart pumping blood around the body and pumping blood within the kidneys. Fortekor therefore reduces this resistance to blood flow around the body and within the kidneys. This makes the job the heart has to do easier which helps a failing heart and it also allows more blood to flow through the kidney therefore helping failing kidneys. In addition it will reduce further damage occurring to a damaged kidney. Fortekor helps the heart pump more effectively and it can reduce the loss of protein in the urine.

Fortekor is given once daily with or without food. Occasionally side effects can be seen such as lethargy or weakness because fortekor can lower blood pressure. If your pet suffers any side effects when taking Fortekor then you should contact your veterinary surgeon.
